DeRoché Strohmayer is an architectural practice based in Accra, New York City, and Vienna. The studio realizes responsive, relevant, and enduring projects that are rooted in their context, designing meaningful, forward-thinking, and inclusive spaces. Guided by creativity and curiosity, the studio’s projects are often led by research and community-focused engagement. The studio’s collaborative approach is aimed at effecting positive change with regards to ecological sustainability and social equity. Designs are informed by an appreciation of traditional and contemporary forms of craftsmanship as well as an enthusiasm for spatial experiences. Particular attention is given to the sourcing, processing, reuse, and physical characteristics of materials. This approach results in bespoke building systems and materials, creating locally sourced solutions that minimize the carbon footprint of projects.
The team is consciously international, diverse and gender-equal. DeRoché Strohmayer prioritizes a sustainable work environment where growth is supported and encouraged. Through fostering long-term partnerships within the studio, the studio cultivates collaboration that results in the successful delivery of ambitious projects.
DeRoché Strohmayer is led by Glenn DeRoché and Juergen Strohmayer, bringing together over twenty years of global experience, working on acclaimed building realizations and academic research. Through this rich experience, the duo has developed a wide range of skill sets that help to conceive customized approaches to every brief. Their inaugural project, the Surf Ghana Collective House, developed in dialogue with the Busua community, has received international recognition and was exhibited at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. DeRoché Strohmayer is the recipient of the 2023 Holcim Gold Award for Sustainable Construction for the Middle East and Africa.
